Origins and history

The procession has its origins in the period of the Spanish domination, when religious congregations played a key role fundamental to the spiritual and social life of communities. The Congregation of the Turchini , founded in 1629, has kept this tradition alive, passing it down from generation to generation.

The Procession

The procession begins at dawn on Good Friday , when the procession leaves from the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo , in the village of Terra Murata, and passes through the streets of the island to the port. The event is characterized by several symbolic elements:

The Misteri: they are wooden structures, built handcrafted by the young people of the island, which depict episodes of the Passion of Christ or moral and social themes. Each "Mistero" is carried by hand by groups of young people dressed in white.

The Brothers of the Turchini : dressed in the traditional blue tunic and white hood, they parade in silence, carrying crosses and instruments of the Passion.

The Dead Christ : the most touching moment is the passage of the statue of the Dead Christ, an 18th century work, transported with devotion and followed by the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, symbol of the pain of the Virgin.

Atmosphere and Meaning

The atmosphere of the procession is full of mysticism and meditation. The silence is broken only by the sound of funeral drums and laments of the faithful. The event is not only a religious manifestation, but also a strong moment of cultural identity for the Procida community.

An Attraction for Visitors

The Good Friday Procession of Procida attracts every year thousands of visitors and photographers, fascinated by its intensity emotional and unique nature of the event. Participation in the procession is considered a great honor and a sign of devotion for the inhabitants of the island.
