TG PROCIDA - INTERVIEW WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE "I RAGAZZI DEI MISTERI" ASSOCIATION: ANTONIO BRECCIANO
Procida - The construction of the mysteries during this period leading up to the Good Friday Procession represents one of the most heartfelt and fascinating events for the people of Procida, a moment when art, faith, and community intertwine in a ritual that is renewed year after year. Behind the magic of these extraordinary sacred representations lies the tireless work of men and women, young and old, united by the desire to pass on a cultural heritage rooted in the past.
In this interview, Antonio Brecciano, president of the I Ragazzi dei Misteri Association, talks about the challenges, commitment, and emotions that accompany the creation of these extraordinary works, emphasizing the value of collaboration and sharing. A journey into the heart of a tradition that lives on thanks to the passion of those who, year after year, dedicate themselves with dedication to the construction of the Misteri.
Mr. President, this year, building the Mysteries seemed particularly difficult. How did you approach this challenge? "It's true, at first we faced seemingly insurmountable difficulties. The spaces where we work were in a state of disrepair, and restoring them was a challenge. But the determination and commitment of our group, combined with the support of the Municipality, which allowed us to use these spaces, made what seemed impossible possible. After two months of intense work, we managed to reclaim them and transform them into art workshops, where the Mysteries come to life every year."
How many people are involved in this edition? "To date, we have thirteen groups of builders who have requested space to work on their Mysteries. In total, we're talking about over three hundred people actively involved, with over one hundred meters of bases already built. The atmosphere is incredible: the musty smell has given way to that of wood, glue, and paint, but above all, an air of sharing and friendship that permeates every corner."
How important is the sense of community at this event? “Fundamental. The evenings spent together remind us of the value of collaboration. Everyone contributes their skills to the success of an event that is not just a tradition, but a part of our identity. It's an experience that strengthens bonds between generations and makes us feel part of something bigger.”
A special role is reserved for the little ones. How do you involve them? "Sundays are dedicated to them. Seeing elementary school children enthusiastically approach the construction of the Mysteries is extraordinary. The more experienced ones pass on their knowledge to the new generations, in a unique moment of growth and sharing. It is precisely in moments like these that we understand how important it is to keep this tradition alive, so that it can be passed down over time."
Have you considered initiatives to facilitate the builders' work? "Yes, it was one of our main goals. We provided tools on loan, such as jigsaws, hammers, cutters, and hot glue guns. This was possible thanks to the generosity of our members and some businesses. Furthermore, to ensure safety and well-being, we are setting up first aid kits in the construction areas, thanks to the collaboration of three pharmacies."
You've also introduced "Member Tuesdays." What are they? "It's an initiative designed to be even closer to the builders. Every Tuesday, we'll offer a small evening meal to those who dedicate their time to building the Mysteries. Some restaurants have already enthusiastically joined in, and we'll continue to involve other local businesses. It's a simple gesture, but it's meant to be a concrete sign of support and gratitude."
The collaboration with the Confraternity of the Turchini. How is this relationship progressing? "We're collaborating closely. So much so that, together with one of the other two associations involved in Good Friday, we wrote a set of rules that we then proposed to the Confraternity. They adopted them for this year's procession, modifying only a few parts. This shows that by working together, significant results can be achieved for the good of tradition and the community."
What are the next steps for Holy Week? "In collaboration with the Municipality, we are working on several new features, including the post-procession display. It will be an opportunity to further showcase the work of those who, with passion, continue to build their own Mystery."
What can the community do to support this tradition? "We ask you not to leave us alone on this journey. Every contribution, large or small, is essential to keeping alive one of the most beautiful and meaningful moments for the people of Procida. The tradition of the Mysteries is a heritage to be preserved and passed down, and only with everyone's commitment can we ensure it is never lost."
We're entering the final month. A final message? "A heartfelt thank you to those who have already given and to those who will continue to support us. Our strength is community, and together we can keep this wonderful tradition alive."

Entriamo nell’ultimo mese. Un messaggio finale? “Grazie di cuore a chi ha già dato e a chi continuerà a sostenerci. La nostra forza è la comunità, ed è insieme che possiamo far vivere questa m
